Consider how UV dyes work. When installed into the automotive A/C system, they circulate with the refrigerant and A/C compressor oil throughout the system. When the oil and refrigerant (freon) leaks, the dye leaves a trace that can be seen with a UV light. However, In some jurisdictions it is illegal to knowing leaking refrigerants to atmosphere. Therefore, it could be considered that UV leak detection methods are illegal.
After all, you install the dye because you know the system is leaking. You are using the dye to show you where the leak is. We’re not trying to provide legal advice, however you should use caution depending on the laws in your particular jurisdiction.
