When it comes to using or adding UV (ultra violet) dyes to automotive air conditioning systems, nothing could be further from the truth! Whenever using UV dyes, it’s really important to understand that the dyes are formulated to work in very small doses or quantities. Typically, the average automotive air conditioning system only requires about 1/4 ounce of a UV dye to make all the leaks show. You must use extreme caution because adding too much UV dye to any system could actually defeat the purpose of it.
Understand that the UV dye concentrate does not fluoresce. In high concentrations, the dyes actually ‘absorb’ the light and they will not reflect back to show the leak. Therefore ‘over filling’ a system with UV dye will not make the smaller leaks show better. In fact, too much UV dye could render all of the dye in the system useless.
