Ultra Violet or UV dyes are probably one of the most common methods of auto A/C Leak detection, and unfortunately, one of the most misunderstood. UV dyes has been a controversial topic in some circles for several years, but more recently they have become a very acceptable method of leak detection. Originally, many A/C service technicians considered them to be a contaminant to the A/C system. Now, most of the original vehicle manufacturers add UV dyes to the A/C system on the assembly line.
Generally speaking, UV Dyes can be a very reliable method of leak detection. The concept of using UV dyes is rather simple. If you add the dye to a leaking system, simply let the system circulate the dye. You should understand that all additives and dyes will suspend in the oil and circulate as part of the oil. Therefore, when there is a leak in the system, the oil (and dye) will leak. All the technician has to do is shine the ‘black light’ or UV light on the system and dye stain should fluoresce. Wherever the dye stain fluoresces is where the leak is. (Just remember not to stop checking after you find one leak. There could be more!)
The problem with UV dyes and black lights or UV lights is that there are several different factors that can seriously effect the reliability of this method of leak detection. Knowing exactly how this method of leak detection works and how you can make it more reliable is an important part of testing for leaks in automotive air conditioning systems.
