For automotive A/C service, there are several different methods of detecting leaks. Aside from manufacturer’s claims, you should know that for the most part, all the various methods work. However, when it comes to accurate and reliable leak detection, there are two important issues to keep in mind. They are
1) There is no one method of leak detection that is the absolute best; 2) How you use any of these methods can easily ‘make’ or ‘break’ your efforts.
If you are seeking reliability, you should know that there is not an absolute, 100% guaranteed method to detect all the leaks all the time. As an example, some technicians will swear by UV dyes (which require the use of black light or UV light). Others will tell you that many leaks are very difficult to locate using dyes. Alternatively, many technicians complain about electronic leak detectors and that they are not reliable all the time. Others swear by electronic leak detectors. For these reasons, as a serious technician, you should be prepared to have at least two different methods of leak detection available.
It's also very important to understand that how you use any of the leak detection methods can seriously effect the reliability of your leak detection. In so many cases, the A/C technician is sold a ‘bill of goods’ and a promise to find all the leaks, not fully understanding the principles of how and why the methods work.
