Typically, when retrofitting an auto A/C system, the old R-12 service ports are changed or converted to R-134a service ports by simply installing a retrofit adapter.
The adapters typically thread onto the old port and provide a quick coupler connection to the A/C system. Installation of the adapters is required by law in most jurisdictions. They are also important to notify future service technicians that the A/C system has been converted from R-12 to R-134a refrigerant. That help prevent cross contamination of refrigerants.
It’s also a good practice to be sure the retrofitted A/C system is labelled. Most retrofit kits include the required adapters and labels so the job is completed properly.
